CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – An excessive heat watch is in effect throughout our region, and temperatures could hit triple digits before the heat wave is over. So when was the last time West Virginia saw a triple-digit temperature?
According to the National Weather Service, the last time both Huntington and Charleston saw a triple-digit temperature day was more than a decade ago on July 8, 2012.
The NWS says the record-high temperature for Charleston is 108 degrees, recorded twice – the first time on Aug. 6, 1918, and the second time on July 4, 1931. Huntington’s record-high temperature is also 108 degrees, recorded on July 28, 1930.
The record-high temperature across West Virginia was recorded in Martinsburg at 112 degrees on July 11, 1936, according to the NWS.
The NWS also says the longest 90+ degree span for Charleston is 13 consecutive days, ending on July 4, 1966. Huntington’s longest 90+ degree run is 16 consecutive days ending on August 11, 1983.
