HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) — It’s that time of the year where seniors in high school across the nation walk the stage and accept their high school diplomas. But, Wayne High School’s commencement ceremony Saturday was a little more special than most.
Wayne High School celebrated their 100th commencement ceremony at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington.
To celebrate the occasion, Wayne High School brought back alumni who have found great success in their fields to help handout diplomas to graduating seniors.
The returning alumni ranged from an alumnus who worked for N.A.S.A. on the Apollo 13 space shuttle, to an alumna nurse practitioner who works for the F.B.I.
13 News spoke to one of the returning alumna, Dr. Patricia Tooley, who worked at Dupont as a chemist and has 27 patents to her name. She had some words of advice for the graduating seniors.
“Never stop learning, continue your education. You can do it in a variety of ways, but never quit. Just keep going for your dreams,” Dr. Tooley said.
At the front of the stage, there was a line of Wayne High School memorabilia, featuring a desk from the first year classes were held at Wayne High School dating back to 1921. There were also team uniforms throughout the years, a diploma from 1941 and a variety of school letterman jackets.
