CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Demolition of the old Macy’s in Charleston is ahead of schedule and should be done in two weeks, making way for the Capital Sports Center, Rodney Loftis of Rodney Loftis & Son Contracting tells 13 News.
Crews from the contracting company began preparing for demolition on April 24, taking down the awning over the Lee Street entrance. Now, Loftis tells 13 News that demolition is ahead of schedule.
Former Macy’s at Charleston Town Center torn down to make way for new sports center
Once demolition began, city and state officials celebrated the economic strides forward as the demolition of the building at the Charleston Town Center is paving the way for the new Capital Sports Center.
The project was announced back in 2022. Once complete it will include: an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a rock-climbing wall, a 30,000 square foot exercise area, rentable party rooms, and a gymnasium with six basketball courts, 12 volleyball courts, and a four-lane elevated walking/running track. An indoor turf field, eight pickleball courts, a wrestling gym with two mats, a retail store, and administrative offices will also be housed in the new development.
